Spotlight on Shady River Farms

Shady River Farms, a family owned farm totaling 220 acres operated by Glenda and Greg Walker and Jerry Ellis in Calhoun, Georgia, has been chosen by the Georgia Club Calf Producers Association Board of Directors to be the 2009 Member Spotlight.

At a very young age, it was apparent of Greg’s love for the cattle industry. After the death of Greg’s dad, Glenda struggled to honor him by making sure Greg was able to continue to show his animals, since that was such a passion of his and his dads. After graduating from high school, Greg went on to graduate from UGA. After graduation, he worked away from the farm for several years. While Jerry and Glenda both continue to work full time jobs, in addition to the farm work, growth has now brought Greg back full time to manage the operation.

Shady River Farms has a 140 head cow herd made up of mainly Angus, SimAngus
based, with a few Shorthorn cows. They have an extensive AI program; as well as
an ET program. They sell numerous 4-H/FFA show prospects each year. Many of
these calves have made their way to the Winner’s Circle. Recently, their winners include the Reserve State Champion Angus Heifer, the Reserve State Champion Appendix Shorthorn heifer, and a division winning steer. Over the past several years, they have had numerous class and breed winning heifers and steers. Shady River Farms has supported many youth beef projects over the past few years, with a lot of success stories.

While Jerry normally remains on the farm to watch after everything, you will find Ms. Glenda in
the show ring stands and barn, supporting the exhibitors who are showing calves from their farm.
At the same time, Greg, who has such a vast knowledge of the industry, is always helping the participants in fitting, clipping, and offering such valuable information to the 4-H and FFA exhibitors.

At Shady River Farms, they also privately sell herd bull prospects, numerous heifers through
the H.E.R.D. program and several feeder steers each year. The family also participates in the
GCCPA Club Calf Sale, the GA Beef Expo Angus Sale, and the H.E.R.D. test bull and heifer
sale.

The GCCPA salute the Walker/Ellis family and Shady River Farms, and as members, we are blessed to have a family of their caliber representing us. Any time you want to experience
true generosity, honesty and integrity, just make a trip to Calhoun, Ga. to Shady River Farms and spend some time with Greg, Glenda and Jerry. The farm is located at 1025 Reeves Station Road, in Calhoun, Ga. and has a breath taking view of Wolf Mountain.

In addition to a family completely devoted to the cattle industry, Ms. Glenda will be seen at the farm with her ministeno pad (a.k.a. SRF bible) checking records, Jerry on a tractor or tagging new babies, and Greg preparing for the next calf crop. More importantly, you will receive a welcoming like no other, and all three of them working together as a team on their cow herd.

Thank you to the Walker/Ellis Family for their dedication to GCCPA. Congratulations on
your honors as breeder of the High Point British Heifer and being named the Platinum Breeder for the 2008-09 show season.

GCCPA would like to thank Gibson Priest for writing this article.
