Callaway
Cattle Co. is located one hour south of Atlanta near Hogansville,
GA. After a 30 year career with the UGA Extension Service (John)
and a 30 year teaching career (Marcia) the decision was made
to relocate from Bremen to the Callaway Family Farm at Corinth
in 2001.
Their son, Wes Pope joined the operation in 2003. A UGA
graduate
in Animal Science, Wes exhibited three state champions including
the Champion Commercial Heifer in 1990, the Grand Steer in
1991 and again in 1993.
Today
the cow herd consists of 100 Angus and Angus Composites (SimAngus,
ChiAngus and Maine-Angus). The Registered Angus
cattle all trace back to the entire heifer calf crop purchased
from Mr. Edgar Rhodes of Bremen when he dispersed. Some of
the commercial cows trace back to the first cow John purchased
as a 4-H project in 1957! An intensive A.I. program has been
in place now for thirty years! No breeds or crosses are treated
differently. They all get the same nutrition.
Along
with raising cattle the Callaway family are strong supporters
of the beef industry by actively participating in the Georgia
Cattlemen’s Association and CattleWomen’s Association,
ANCW, NCBA, Georgia Club Calf Producers Association and more.
Cattle are marketed as show steers and heifers, commercial
bulls and replacement heifers.
